Not that anyone will read this page, but I thought I should explain the idea driving Gourt. I believe that in spite of the improvement of search over the years, people really appreciate following a string of links on the topic they are interested in. Search is not perfect and when you have found a site that has information that is close to what you want, there is tremendous value in being shown where to go for all related information. This is our niche.
In the beginning Gourt appeared to be another DMOZ clone. However, the intent has always been to use DMOZ structure and content as a starting point in pulling as much related information together in one place as possible. The second step was merging the DMOZ content with Wikipedia articles...by matching the article to the name of the DMOZ category. This is still an ongoing process, but much of Wiki correctly matches the category it is placed.
The next step has just begun and that is the integration of RSS feeds, again by matching the content of the page to the content of the RSS feeds. We are not accepting all RSS feeds but only those that are stable and authorative (very subjective) to us. So far, we have added over 2000 RSS feeds and have another 5000 to integrate.
There are many agregators out there but we are different in making the feeds visible within the context of other sources of information. Also, unlike some aggregators when you subscribe to our feed and click to read the article, we take you to the source article, not back to gourt.com for the limited description provided in the feed (surrounded by Google ads), like Topix. Topix is fine otherwise, but this seems like hijacking the sources content to me.
We are shortly adding Youtube (and other video sources) to relevant content on a trial basis. I think this is an exciting departure from our text only approach, but we want to control the quality and relavance of the videos displayed.
There are endless possiblities of information to merge but it will always be led by this same approach of relevant information.
On a side note, when he was 19,my older brother, created a provacative painting in his private bathroom of a mermaid. It was the only painting I knew him to create, I was only 9 and I spent a lot of time looking at it. He signed it gourt, perhaps to throw off our mother. To David
